Our Practice

We understand that sharing your concerns about your child with a stranger can be a difficult experience. Our hope is to ease the stress of this process and help families obtain answers and services as efficiently as possible.

We understand that along the way, you may have received conflicting advice from family and friends, or maybe even from your child's health care team, leaving you more confused than ever. We will take the necessary time to ensure YOU feel heard and YOUR questions are answered.

Ultimately, we know that one size does not fit all and that you and your child may have unique needs during the diagnostic process. We value flexibility and direct physician access for our patients, so we built our practice to prioritize community partnerships, allow for after-hours scheduling, in-home evaluations, monthly subscription based services for complex medication management, and expanded telehealth throughout South Carolina.

We look forward to tailoring our services to meet your family's needs.  â€‹â€‹

Dr. McCafferty

Physician Led Care

Dr. McCafferty is a Developmental & Behavioral Pediatrician who completed her Pediatrics Residency and DBP Fellowship in South Carolina.  While attempting to understand the barriers to care for children with complex health care needs in South Carolina, and improve opportunities for early autism diagnosis, Dr. McCafferty grew deeply attached to the lowcountry and ultimately decided to build a practice that could directly serve her community.

As the only private practice DBP in South Carolina, she is motivated by meaningful relationships with her patients' families and the opportunity to embrace innovative ideas that could improve access to services. Did you know there are fewer than 800 DBPs in the country?

Becoming a DBP was a second career for Dr. McCafferty, who is also a US Navy Veteran. The decision to drastically change careers was partially inspired by her nephew who was born with a rare genetic syndrome. This later in life transition meant she and her husband had to grow their family during medical training, and are fortunate to have settled in to raising their three children close to the beaches that bring them joy.

In practice, she is a strong advocate for the medical care home and believes in empowering General Pediatricians to deliver autism-related care directly to their patients in a comfortable and accessible environment. Her clinical style is heavily influenced by her collective experiences as a physician and a mother.

Specifically, because of her experience as a physician with a late-diagnosis of ADHD, she welcomes requests for second opinions, record reviews, and enjoys helping families understand atypical presentations of ADHD, Autism, and anxiety. More importantly, as a mother who had to navigate developmental delays with her own child, it is her personal mission to ensure that families feel safe to express their concerns without judgement.

Interested in Joining Our Team?

Similarly to how we respect the lived experience of our patients and their families, we respect the unique experiences and perspectives of our physicians and community partners. Instead of prescribing to a rigid practice model that may lead to burnout; the Breakwater Center fosters a supportive environment where physicians can safely carve out their own practice style that fits their life and family, WHILE embracing community networking opportunities, maintaining their autonomy, and protecting the integrity of their medical license.

We are always looking for ways to grow our community and better serve our patients.  If you have a skillset that could support our vision, we want to know! We are interested in engaging with community based social workers, therapists, general pediatricians, clinical psychologists, educators, and entrepreneurs who have big plans and ideas and dreams about exploring new models of care.

Why not reach out and see if together, we could create something incredible?
